Our Flag Was Still There tells the inspiring tale behind the
writing of America's beloved anthem. The story is filled with drama,
suspense, and danger. Francis Scott Key, captured by the British while
conducting a prisoner release negotiation during the War of 1812, finds
himself an unwilling spectator of the enemy's bombardment of Fort
McHenry. As bombs burst overhead, the captive strains his eyes for sight
of the "broad stripes and bright stars" that will tell him the
fate of the city of Baltimore. Does the flag still wave proudly or has
she been torn from her post by British invaders? Francis Scott Key's
poem, written the next morning as a result of his suspenseful night,
became "The Star Spangled Banner".
